Abstract
The authors develop a theory of expectations about interpersonal power to control rewards and punishments, and to induce compliance. They present an extended review of conceptions of power, and identify four empirical features that can be used to assess their new theory. The theory includes ideas on subjective expected utility and expectations for power and power use.
