Item Intern experience at General Electric Corporate Research and Development Center: an internship report(Texas A&M University, 2013-03-13) Bass, James Traugott, 1957-Item Intern experience at the Union Carbide Corporation, Texas City plant: an internship report(Texas A&M University, 2013-03-13) Tippett, Donald Dwight, 1947-This report presents a survey of the author's internship experience with Union Carbide Corporation's Texas City plant during the period July 1, 1980 through May 15, 1981. The ten and one-half month internship was spent as an engineering intern attached to the Maintenance Department, with access to virtually every staff and line component of the organization. The intent of this report is to demonstrate that this experience fulfills the requirements of the Doctor of Engineering internship. The author's internship activities can be divided into three major categories which correspond to the three principal internship objectives. The first objective required a study of the organization and how the individual parts function together to produce results. This study was conducted by taking part in various diverse orientations and small projects throughout the organization. The second objective called for development of interpersonal and management skills. This was accomplished by participating in all forms of daily business activities, talking with the observing managers, receiving formal management training and taking advantage of every opportunity to practice these important skills. The third objective required an identifiable contribution be made to one or more particular projects. The three principal projects to which the author contributed involved inventory control, industrial hygiene, and maintenance workforce utilization. The result of the internship experience was an appreciation for both the technical and non-technical aspects of operating a large chemical plant. The conclusion of the report is that the objectives were met and the internship requirement for the degree of Doctor of Engineering has been satisfied.Item Intern experience at the General Electric Company: an internship report(Texas A&M University, 2013-03-13) Aucoin, Bruce Michael, 1954-Item Intern experience at URS Company: an internship report(Texas A&M University, 2013-03-13) Elkarmi, Fawwaz, 1950-This report describes the author's internship experience with URS Company - Dallas, Texas, from May 1980 to May 1981. The internship company is a consulting engineering firm engaged in providing professional services in the transportation, energy, pollution abatement, water resources, and water and wastewater treatment fields. The author worked as an electrical design engineer during the internship period. The author was also assigned the responsibilities and duties of a project engineer for one of the ongoing projects. The internship objectives were set to provide the author with an internship experience that fulfills the requirements of the Doctor of Engineering Program. These objectives were to become familiar with the organizational characteristics of the company; to make an identifiable contribution in the electrical engineering field; and to gain experience in the non-academic activities of the company, industry standards, ethical practices, and the interactions between the company and the industrial environments. During the internship period the author was involved in designing electrical power distribution, lighting, and control systems for the Dallas East Side Water Treatment Plant and some other projects. The author also developed a computer program to calculate feeder, conduit, and circuit breaker sizes for electrical power circuits. Furthermore, the author gained experience in project management, industry practices, and the internal and external activities of the internship company.Item Intern experience at Honeywell, Inc., Large Information Systems Division: an internship report(Texas A&M University, 2013-03-13) Ismail, Abdel-Wahab Tarek, 1956-This report describes the author's internship assignment at Honeywell Inc. - Large Information Systems Division from January, 1982 through August, 1982. The purpose of the assignment was to fulfill the internship requirements of the Doctor of Engineering Program. During the internship, the author held the position of VLSI design engineer, where he worked on a predefined project. The project's objective was to evaluate how circuit designs based on an advanced CMOS process, can be applied to hardware products at LISD. The internship allowed the author to successfully apply the MOS circuit design training, which ws developed at Texas A&M, to an industrial project. In addition, involvement in different activities and exposure to the various problems not encountered in academia, made this internship an invaluable experience.Item Intern experience at the Honeywell Test Instrument Division: an internship report(Texas A&M University, 2013-03-13) Sengupta, Debasis, 1949-This report documents the industrial experience accrued by the author during a twelve month Doctor of Engineering internship served with Honeywell. Background of the internship is discussed, including the intern's position in the organization of the plant. Major projects assigned during the internship are defined. The problem of occupational exposure to vinyl chloride, a toxic chemical, is addressed and a system for monitoring employee exposure is developed and proposed. During this period, he was responsible for the following assignments: 1. specifying the appropriate computer to implement an existing financial management system, 2. developing a "Project Management Quality Control Manual" which contains guidelines and checklists for the management and administration of a project from conception through completion, 3. designing the mechanical systems on a lift span bridge to be constructed over Bayou Grain Caillou in Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, 4. serving as project manager on three projects, 5. developing computer programs for billing clients and keeping drafting time records, and 6. particiipating in contract negotiations, fee proposal preparation, and Management Committee meetings. These assignments exposed the author to a broad spectrum of both technical and managerial problems and practices. The eight month internship was spent as an engineering intern with a small consulting firm specializing in high technology state-of-the-art manufacturing technology management and assessment. The intent of this report is to demonstrate that this experience fulfills the requirements of the Doctor of Engineering internship. The primary objective of the internship was to develop technical expertise in the field of industrial automation. Secondary goals were to improve oral and written communication skills and project management techniques. The three projects presented in this report met these objectives and goals. The major project was to develop a state-of-the-art assessment of robotics. This assessment was developed by surveying hundreds of robots users, manufacturers and researchers, and undertaking a comprehensive literature search on U.S. and foreign robots. The information was distilled into a professional managerial level report on robotics. The second project was to develop technical summaries and assessments of completed projects of the Army Missile Command's Manufacturing Technology Program. This was performed by reviewing project reports and interviewing government and contractor engineers throughout the country. The third project was to be an Associate Editor for Manufacturing Technoogy Horizons digest. This is a bi-monthly digest featuring major developments in manufacturing techniques and equipment. Short concise summaries for manufacturing processes were researched and developed through written correspondence and phone interviews. The internship was an opportunity to use my engineering skills to learn about the robotics industry, and improve oral and written communication skills. Thus, objectives for the Doctor of Engineering degree were met and the internship requirement satisfied.Item Intern experience at Brown & Root, Incorporated: an internship report(Texas A&M University, 2013-03-13) Roengnarong Ratanaprichavej, 1949-This internship report describes the major activities and accomplishments during the author's one-year intership at Brown & Root in Houston, Texas. The report discusses his engineering assignments, and the necessary functions of a project engineer. The author's assignments covered essentially the technical nature and procedures of his work in several areas of fixed offshore platform design. The author presents and discusses the managerial functions of a project engineer whom he observed working in an offshore engineering company. An energy audit of The Andersons' Maumee complex was performed to determine amounts of energy used and how it was used. A recommendations report for a company-wide energy management program was presented to management. The intent of this recommendations report was to develop a company energy policy, determine required manpower and structure for a proposed energy department within the company, and develop a company-wide energy conservation program. In addition, coordination and management of several energy conservation projects was undertaken. Engineering projects other than energy management were performed. These involved work associated with a survey of waste materials to insure compliance with federal regulations on hazardous wastes; a study of the grain aeration system at the Champaign elevator to evaluate a possible redesign; and engineering analyses of country elevators being evaluated for lease under the company's Linkage Program. These projects required a close working relationship with engineering, environmenetal protection, maintenance, purchasing and accounting departments, as well as with operations personnel. Thus, this internship position at The Andersons provided exposure to a various segments of the company. This broad exposure to a variety of engineering problem areas provided a valuable educational experience.Item Intern Experience at Phillips Petroleum Company: An Internship Report(Texas A&M University, 2013-03-13) Harrington, Craig Douglas, 1956-Item Internship experience at Texas Instruments: the internship report(Texas A&M University, 2013-03-13) Glover, Kerry Cloyce, 1954-This report presents a survey of the author's internship experience with Texas Instruments from November 1980 to November 1981. The internship was spent in the Advanced Research and Development Division of the Digital Systems Group. The report's intent is to demonstrate that this experience fulfulls the requirements of the Doctor of Engineering internship. The author's internship activities involved the design of a special purpose processor. The internship was divided into two parts during which different versions of the processor were developed. The first design was of a slow processor which was to be simple to build and debug. The second design was a high performance, and therefore complex, processor. Several areas of expertise were gained during the internship including simulation, caching techniques and pipelining.
