Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine if managers in a health services setting would identify different management training needs (topics) for themselves than would experts in the field of health services management. It was also the intent to identify commonalities and differences in perceptions among managers and experts regarding the importance they attached to specific training needs. Utilizing a Delphi technique, the 117 study participants (102 managers in a selected health services setting and 15 experts in the field of health services management) indicated their opinions regarding management training needs of health services managers. In Round I, each participant listed five management training needs and subsequently rated the importance attached to the needs in Rounds II and III. Results of the data analyses revealed that 83% of all management training needs were mentioned by both managers and experts. One topic, manpower planning, was mentioned by an expert exclusively and 14 topics were mentioned by a manager exclusively. Nurses differed from administrators and allied health professionals in the importance they attached to 9.5% of the training topics. Consensus was achieved on 82% of the topics. Based on the data and within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were made: 1. Managers in a selected health services setting perceived the following management training needs: (a) communication process, (b) knowing and understanding organizational rules and regulations, (c) developing motivational skills, (d) leadership process, and (d) financial management techniques. 2. Health services management experts perceived the following management training needs of managers in a health services setting: (a) communication process, (b) leadership process, (c) developing motivational skills, (d) cost analysis, (e) knowing and understanding organizational rules and regulations, (f) theories in hospital management, and (g) governmental health and health education statistics, rules, and regulations. 3...
