dc.description.abstract | The ability to consider multiple perspectives was proposed to be an individual difference variable. A measure of this ability was developed and the validity and reliability determined. Three additional experiments were conducted to examine the effect of differences in this ability on subjects' reaction to a persuasion attempt, their ability to solve problems, and their tendency to perseverate. Results revealed that subjects who possessed a low ability to consider multiple perspectives were more vulnerable to a persuasion attempt in a distraction paradigm, were less able to find alternative solutions to mathematical problems after being led into a problem-solving set, and showed a greater tendency for their beliefs to perseverate. | en |
