Data Report: Oligocene Paleoceanography of the Equatorial Pacific Ocean: Planktonic and Benthic Foraminifer Stable Isotope Results from Site 1218
Abstract
To document the evolution of the early cryosphere, stable isotope
analyses were conducted on the planktonic and benthic foraminifers
from Ocean Drilling Program Site 1218. We generated two parallel 54-
m-long records at 10-cm resolution and thus produced a standard Pacific
stable isotope reference curve for the 26.4- to 30.0-Ma interval
within the Oligocene. These data are necessary to document the timing
and magnitude of glacial events through the Oligocene. Pronounced
variations are recorded in both planktonic and benthic foraminifer δ13C
between +0.32‰ and +1.67‰ and –0.18‰ and +1.09‰, respectively.
There is an overall increase in δ18O though the record, toward heavier
values in the late Oligocene.
