Abstract
This compilation identifies (through purely subjective means) the most significant
weather events to strike Texas and Oklahoma since the keeping of regular weather records.
This information first appeared in Nielsen-Gammon’s monthly column for The Cattleman
magazine. Weather events are divided into thirteen categories, and the key weather events in
each category are listed and described.
In all, 94 weather events are listed, some in more than one category. The earliest was the
Indianola hurricane of 1875, and the most recent was the San Antonio flood of 2002. At the
rate of a bit less than once per year, major weather events will continue to occur in Texas
and Oklahoma, so addenda will be posted when appropriate.
