Abstract
Phased arrays of antennas have found many applications in radio frequency and microwave frequency systems. One example of their use is in multibeam phased arrays for communications satellites. Patch antennas are well suited to phased arrays due to their ease of manufacture. One drawback to this simple patch antenna is its small bandwidth. Many techniques were developed to increase the bandwidth of patch antennas. Most of these methods involve a large increase in size and/or the manufacturing complexity of the antenna. This thesis details the work done on developing a broadband patch antenna that is compact and easily manufactured. Three antenna designs are detailed herein. Simulation and measured results indicate that the double II-shaped u-slot patch antenna meets the requirements for element spacing. This antenna design is then tested to demonstrate its feasibility in phased array applications.
