Abstract
Residential Construction faces problems regarding inefficiencies of material usage. Builders pay twice for the lumber that is wasted. Once when it is purchased and once when it is disposed. Part of the lumber waste is generated due to the design of the house frame. To be able to reduce waste caused by design, it is necessary to identify parameters of design, which cause the waste and control for them. This study is exploratory in nature. It proposes a research methodology that can be used to measure lumber waste caused due to design parameters. The proposed methodology can be applied to a large sample of houses in a future study. Based on data collected on six houses, an attempt was made to quantify the waste caused by complexity of the roof, the ceiling, the wails, the varying heights of the walls and the area of the floor, walls and openings. The thesis discusses the problems faced during the data collection process and proposes solutions for them. Based on the experiences of collecting and analyzing data on these houses, advancements have been proposed in the research design.
