Abstract
The latent structure of the psychological construct of dissociation was investigated via the MAMBAC and MAXCOV barometric procedures. Data for the analyses were collected from 988 undergraduate university students and 102 persons diagnosed as having a dissociative disorder. The Questionnaire of Experiences of Dissociation (QED; Riley, 1988) and the Dissociative Experiences Scale (DES; Bernstein & Putnam, 1986) were used to measure dissociative experiences. Further analyses were conducted to validate the reliability of the MAMBAC and MAXCOV procedures with the data dichotomous format. Support for the taxonic model of dissociation was provided by barometric analysis of indicators drawn from the QED and DES. Analysis the MAMBAC procedure suggested that MAMBAC may be prone produce spurious, pseudo-taxonic results when the data be analyzed are dichotomous format. Analysis of the MAXCOV procedure provided evidence that MAXCOV may be robust to problems of pseudo-taxonicity associated with the use of dichotomous data.
