dc.description.abstract | "And Man Shall Have Dominion Over the Earth": Rhetorical Evangelical Christians are not typically associated with mainstream environmentalism. This thesis examines the mythical traditions underpinning the efforts by some Evangelicals to re-discover the biblical mandate for creation care. This thesis explains the messages from an Evangelical environmental conference called EarthCare '95 using a method called "mytheme analysis." It explicates the themes that Evangelicals use to foster identification with other Evangelicals while challenging them to consider caring for creation. For example, conference presenters challenged the audience to view creation care as a way to worship Christ the Savior, as a mandate that is biblically derived, and as an opportunity to witness to the secular world. This thesis explains and evaluates the conference messages for their rhetorical ability to resonate with Evangelicals. | en |
