The literary representation of certain Spanish castaways who lived among the North American Indians

Abstract

The narrations of the Sixteenth Century Spanish castaways occupy one of the most dramatic places in the cultural history of the New World. They document a cultural process that was the antithesis of Spanish colonization. During their life among the Indians, the castaways adopted indigenous traits in order to survive, and many of them experienced the process of indigenization. However, becoming "indigenized Spaniards" was a scandalous concept among the Spanish colonists during the Sixteenth Century. As a result, the colonial disdain for indigenization created a spectrum in the literary representation of the castaways in the chosen works of the present thesis. These literary reactions range from the denial of indigenization to the recognition of indigenization. The narrations that deny indigenization relate the experiences of the castaways in the contexts of demonization and indifference. The narrations that recognize indigenization relate the experiences of the castaways in the contexts of restraint and acceptance. These four rhetorical styles reflect the variety of the norms and prejudices of colonial society as well as the complexity of the studied texts. Las narraciones de los naufragos y cautivos espanoles del siglo XVI ocupan uno de los fugares mas dramdticos en la historia cultural del Nuevo Mundo. Documentan un proceso cultural que era la antftesis de la colonizacion espanola. Durante su vida entre los indfgenas, los naufragos y cautivos adoptaron rasgos indfgenas para sobrevivir y muchos de ellos pasaron por el proceso de indigenizacion; sin embargo, flegar a ser <<espafioles indigenizados>> fue un concepto escandaloso entre los colonos espaholes durante el siglo XVI. Como resultado, el desdon colonial por la indigenizacion creo un modelo o un esquema en la representacion literaria de Jos ndufragos y cautivos en las obras escogidas de la presente tesis. Estas reacciones literarias van desde la negacion de la indigenizacion hasta el reconocimiento de la indigenizacion. Las narraciones que niegan'la indigenizacion relatan las experiencias de los ndufragos y cautivos en Jos contextos de la demonizaci6n y de la indiferencia. Las narrraciones que reconocen la indigenizacion relatan las experiencias de los ndufragos y cautivos en los contextos del rechazo y de la aceptacion. Estos cuatro estilos retoricos sociedad colonial como la complejldad de los textos en de la estudio.
