dc.description.abstract | This thesis covers the development of a manual planning procedure based on the computerized method of exploded views to generate an optimal or near-optimal assembly sequence. Care has been taken to minimize iterative and tedious operations and make the most effective but methodical use of human reasoning. Each step of this algorithm is explained in depth along with a detailed accounting for both user errors and method failures. This manual procedure is applied to three uniaxial and three multiaxial products. The procedure is intended to be incorporated into the teaching and practicing of design for assembly to and by students and engineers. Significant cost savings in industry have been attributed to design for assembly, but whereas much work has been devoted to the local optimization of a given assembly sequence or the computerized generation of multiple assembly sequences, all of which requiring extensive user inputs, this work attempts to apply global principles in design for assembly to generate a sequence that forces the designer to analyze various aspects of the design which could apply to any product. | en |
