Manganese is a trace element essential to the integrity of the bone. In this study, we manipulated estrogen independently, diet independently and combinations of estrogen and diet in Sprague-Dawley rats to analyze the effects of ovariectomy and dietary manganese deficiency on bone. The animals were placed on combinations of a manganese deficient or basal diet before and/or after ovariectomy. Their bones and serum were analyzed to determine if manganese deficiency exacerbated osteopenia. Ovariectomyinduced osteopenia was characterized by decreased percent trabecular bone and bone density. Osteopenia appeared to be aggravated by a manganese deficiency as evidenced by a decrease in bone density and bone calcium.en
