Abstract
In this thesis, we investigate the robustness of the block truncation coding algorithm. Block truncation coding is an efficient image compression scheme which requires relatively simple calculations and a small amount of data storage for its implementation. It uses a one bit quantizer with two output levels and a threshold. We address the imperfect knowledge of the true quantizer output levels by deriving a quantitative robustness measure for block truncation coding utilizing a differential geometric approach. The robustness value for three distinct images is computed and a listing of the numerical values is provided. Lastly, we investigate the relationship between the value of the robustness measure and changes in mean square error due to the effects of salt and pepper noise
