dc.description.abstractI compare atomic excitation cross sections obtained from analytic approximations with results of an exactly soluble model. The model examined is the collision of a particle interacting via a short range potential with a heavy nucleus and its circulating electron. Research concludes that the Response theory is suitable for calculating total cross sections but the theory must be modified to evaluate differential cross sections. The necessary modifications are surmised and a Modified Response theory is presented.en
