The distribution of particulate matter (PM) in the Central Subtropical Pacific and its relationships with water masses and currents were determined from optical and hydrographic data. Beam attenuation data were collected with a Sea Tech transmissometer during the World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) Hydrographic Program. The transmissometer was interfaced with a CTD for WOCE lines P17 and P16, along 135' and 150' W respectively, during July and August 1991. The beam attenuation due to particles (cp) is derived less than 20 [ ]m, and is strongly concentration. A calibration of primarily from particles less than 20 [ ]m, and is strongly correlated with particle concentration. A calibration of beam attenuation was made during two Joint Global Ocean Flux (EQPAC) cruises along 140' W Study (JGOFS) Equatorial Pacific (EQPAC) cruises along 140' W in 1992, and is used to estimate particle mass concentration from cplen
