dc.description.abstract | In this thesis, the operation of electric machines as three port devices is studied in detail. Electric machines used in this manner are referred to as electromagnetic gears in this research. All possible steady-state operating modes of these three-port devices have been explained in this thesis. Mathematical models for operating a switched reluctance machine and a separately excited dc machine as electromagnetic gears have been derived. These models have been used for simulating the performance of electromagnetic gears under various operating conditions. Electromagnetic gears can be used in hybrid electric propulsion systems as power sharing devices. This thesis explains the detailed operation of a new hybrid propulsion system utilizing electromagnetic gears. This propulsion system was proposed by Dr. M. Ehsani and has been named the "Transmotor Hybrid". The limitation of this propulsion system has also been explained in this thesis. The application of electromagnetic gears in hybrid propulsion systems has been described in detail in this research. | en |
