Abstract
Karyotypic data are presented for a total of 723 individuals of Peromyscus boylii from Latin America. The range of karyotypic variation now documented in P. boylii (FN = 47-68) is greater than that known for any other species of Peromyscus, and includes karyotypes (FN = 47-51) not known to occur in other species of the genus. Five karyotypic groups are recognized based on karyotypic and geographic factors. These groups do not correlate with the current taxonomy of P. boylii, and the differences indicate that more than one species is represented in what is now considered P. boylii. It is suggested that the forms beatae (FN = 47-54), levipes (FN = 56-60), and rowlevi (FN = 52) represent distinct species, and the distributions of these forms are reevaluated in light of the karyotypic data. Two discrete patterns of chromosomal variation are identified within levipes. Little data are available for boylii-like forms from western Mexico, and the taxonomic status and systematic affinities of these forms remains unresolved.
