Abstract
Morphological characters of the 48 species in the Cicindela subgenus Cicindelidia were analyzed cladistically. The results of this analysis indicate that Cicindelidia is composed of 6 species lineages. Within this group, 2 sister lineages contain all the New World species with testaceous abdomens except C. fera Chevrolat. The taxa of the 2 lineages possessing testaceous abdomens were examined morphologically, distributionally and ecologically to confirm their species level status. Twenty species level taxa are recognized. A cladistic analysis of these species demonstrates that C. rufiventris Dejean belongs to a lineage separate from the sister species C. sedecimpunctata Klug and C. flohri Bates and that these 3 species should not be considered a species complex. Data from the morphological analyses also demonstrated that the population previously referred to as C. rufiventris reducens W. Horn is more closely allied to C. flohri. Populations of the species C. rufiventris, C. sedecimpunctata and C. flohri were analyzed using numerical taxonomic methods of principal components analyses and clustering techniques. These populations were also examined in respect to their color, genitalic, ecological and geographic distribution characteristics. Cicindela rufiventris contains 3 subspecies distributed from Massachusetts and Illinois to the states of Queretaro and Veracruz, Mexico. Cicindela sedecimpunctata includes 2 subspecies and is distributed from New Mexico, Arizona and Texas to Costa Rica. Cicindela flohri contains 2 subspecies and is distributed in an arc along the Mexican highlands of the Sierra Madre Occidental and Transverse Volcanic System from Chihuahua to Veracruz. Keys are presented for the identification of these 3 species and their subspecies. The male and female genitalia are illustrated. Adults of each recognized subspecific taxon are described and lists of synonomy are presented.
