Abstract
The purpose of this study was to provide current and accurate information about the demographics of the community education enrollees and their levels of satisfaction with community school programs to community education practitioners throughout the state of Texas. In order to achieve this purpose seven questions were posed. 1. What are the demographic characteristics of adult enrollees in Texas' community education projects during the 1983-84 school year? 2. How does the demographic characteristics of community education enrollees compare to the demographic characteristics of the general population of the counties in which community education projects are located? 3. What are the overall levels of satisfaction with the community education program? 4. What are the levels of satisfaction per ethnic group? 5. What are the levels of satisfaction per class category? 6. Are there significant differences in levels of satisfaction per ethnic group? 7. Are there significant differences in levels of satisfaction per class category? Questionnaires were sent to 2,325 community education enrollees in 80 of the 119 Texas Education Agency funded community school projects. The return rate for the projects was 100%, all 80 projects returned some questionnaires. Of the 2,325 questionnaires mailed, 2,120 were returned for a 91% return rate. The majority of community education enrollees were white (64%). Twenty-five percent were Hispanic and blacks represented 6% of the enrollees. The largest age group was 25-34 year olds, (30%). Youth represented 8% and 10% of the enrollees were over 55 years old. There were more females than males. The majority of enrollees (78%), had graduated from high school. The ethnic breakdown of community education enrollees resembles the ethnic breakdown of the general population. Overall levels of satisfaction with the program and support for the program were high. Whites and Hispanics were more satisfied, and Asians were less satisfied. There were few significant differences between ethnic groups or class categories in levels of satisfaction and levels of support.
