Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of utilizing the metric system during the "team design project" activities in engineering graphics upon students' performance on a metric cognitive achievement test. This study also attempted to determine if certain student aptitudes and experiences were related to the acquisition of metric system concepts in engineering graphics. The student aptitudes and experiences investigated in this study were measured using the following instruments: (1) SAT-verbal scores, (2) SAT-mathematical scores, (3) drafting test scores, (4) the number of semester of high school drafting, (5) the number of semesters of metric instruction, and (6) the number of months of industrial work experience. Methods of Study: The investigation was conducted as a present-posttest quasi-experiment design with one experimental group and one control group. The sample under investigation was composed of 270 students who were enrolled in the freshmen engineering graphics course at Texas A&M University during the Fall semester of 1977. There were 138 students in the experimental group and 132 students in the control group.
