Abstract
Complexes of gossypol with bovine serum albumin and glandless cottonseed meal were synthesized and the gossypol content determined. Lysine methods were devised to determine the lysine which was complexed with the gossypol and lysine occurring with free e-amino groups. The author's method was compared with Carpenter's method and with the method of Kakade and Liener. Nine isonitrogenous diets were formulated, each with a different source of protein or level of lysine including plant and animal proteins. Lysine determinations were made to ascertain total lysine, available lysine and unavailable lysine. Chick feeding trials were conducted and biological values obtained for each of the diets. These data gave support to the accuracy of the author's method which eliminates carbohydrate interference with the determination of available lysine and is not affected by the disappearance of DNP-lysine acid hydrolysis and so a correction factor is not necessary.
