Abstract
Statement of the Problem [line break] The primary purpose of this study was to determine what counseling services are provided and what further counseling services are needed for slow learners in public high schools. The secondary purpose was to determine what responsibilities counselors assume or can assume with regard to the problems of slow learners. [line break] Procedures [line break] To secure data on what counseling services are available in high schools and what further services are needed, a survey questionnaire was constructed. The study investigated the following dimensions of the slow learners problem: (1) identification, (2) grouping, (3) planning curriculum, (4) psychological difficulties, and (5) vocational opportunities. Counselors in public high schools were the subjects of the study. A three per cent random sample was proportionately taken from each state. Questionnaires and self-addressed envelopes were mailed to the counselors of the 535 schools thus selected. A total of 189 usable questionnaires or 35 per cent of the total sample were returned. Data on each closed item were tabulated and converted to percentages. The responses to the open end questions were briefly summarized and some example responses to them were reported. ...
