Explore the Genetic Frontier: Biotechnology and Cotton-Texas' Biggest Crop
Abstract
This publication is one of the Explore the Genetic Frontier series brochures that discuss the use of biotechnology to develop new varieties of plants for human needs. Texas is the No. 1 producer of cotton in the United States. This brochure addresses the introduction of the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) gene into cotton. This makes the cotton resistant to certain insects and enables farmers to cut their costs, increase profits and reduce their use of and exposure to traditional pesticides.
