Abstract
This thesis is divided into three parts. The first part presents the reception of John Dewey's ideas in the United States and Jose Ortega y Gasset's ideas in Spain. In both cases, different socio-historical situations are analyzed in order to show the reaction of both thinkers to such events. The reaction to their ideas is also pointed out. The second part analyzes the main factors which contributed to the reception process: Waltmann's concept of ideology, Carnap's definition of framework and Goody's theory about ethnocentrism. In the last part an explanation of how these different factors influence reception and how they are supported by the social context is given. The conclusion is that the formal rationality that supports the social system was not adequate in order to understand John Dewey's ideas in the United States or Jose Ortega y Gasset's ideas in Spain.
