Abstract
The main part of the work described herein is the development and testing of a surface ionization source for use on a collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy apparatus. A description of the previously existing fast beam apparatus is given. The additions and improvements to the apparatus are described, as are the testing and the optimization of this apparatus. Results of this optimization are presented. The theory of surface ionization is given in Chapter IV, culminating in the Langmuir surface ionization efficiency, P. Ion sources, in general, are dicussed. The experimental setup of the surface ionization source is described, and is followed by the results for the ionization of lithium, samarium and neodymium. In the last part of this work, the preparation for a collinear fast beam laser spectroscopy experiment on Li+, more specifically on the 23S1-23P2 transition, is described. Results of preliminary testing of the spectroscopy apparatus are also presented. The outlook on the spectroscopy experiment is given in conclusion.
