Abstract
A pulsed beam time-of-flight system was used in Order to measure the stopping power of carbon ions in a thin carbon film relative to energy.loss measurements of He ions in the same carbon film. Previous measurements of He stopping powers in C in the low energy range have been reported by J. Pearce and R. Hart, Moorhead and others. These give good approximations of the energy loss of He ions in C targets. In order to get a precise value of the thickness of the C film used in this work, measurements of the energy loss of a He beam in the C film were done in the energy range 80-140 keV. The results showed that the C film had a thickness of 12.1 pg/CM2. Measurements of the stopping power of C ions in C targets in the energy range of 100 keV are scarce. In the present work, the stopping powers of C ions in the same C film in the energy range 80140 keV were obtained. The experimental results proved to be significantly higher than those calculated using TRIM.
