Abstract
Chemical process pumps can be required to handle highly temperature sensitive liquids. Improper operation of such a centrifugal pump can lead to potentially dangerous liquid temperatures within the pump casing. Determination of where and how to best monitor the liquid temperature inside a pump casing is the subject of this paper. This involves the determination of the points of maximum temperature generation and the relationship of this to measurements in other locations and by other methods. This paper examines the actual testing performed on four typical chemical process pumps, of various manufacture, fitted with a multitude of temperature probes over the full flow range at various pump speeds. Extensive data are collected at deadhead (zero flowrate), examined, and compared with existing predictive published data.
