The purpose of this study was to establish baseline data from international students regarding health care system perspectives, access, barriers, and utilization. International students bring preconceived ideas regarding health care based on the health care system of their country. These ideas affect their perceptions, expectations, and use of health care. The research of this thesis was limited to students of the Newly Independent States of the former Soviet Union (NIS). The health care systems were analyzed to determine what beliefs these students may carry with them. A survey was conducted to gather information about the NIS international students language use, health insurance, hospital utilization and access to care, and basic demographics. The results can be used by the university health care clinics as well as by other health care facilities to help understand NIS international students utilization and barriers.en
