dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this research was to establish the optimum driver information strategy regarding Super 2 passing lane sections in Texas. A Driver Survey and a Before and After Study examining proposed skip stripe pavement marking, signing, and roadway geometrics associated with the proposed development of Super 2 roadways were conducted in order to make this determination. The survey and field studies were conducted during Summer 2001. The Driver Survey was conducted in three groups of surveys encompassing five TxDOT Districts; Amarillo/Childress, Odessa, and San Angelo/San Antonio. These locations were selected due to the possibility of Super 2 passing lane roadways being constructed in these areas. A total of 141 individuals took part in the survey. The survey consisted of questions associated with signing, the skip stripe pavement marking being researched, pavement marking associated with passing, and geometric design features of passing lane sections. The field studies were performed along highway US 83 near Childress, Eden, and Leakey Texas. These locations are within Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Districts where Super 2 passing lanes may be constructed in the near future. Analysis of the data collected during the Before and After Studies consisted of traffic characteristics of speed, headway, volume, and vehicle class. This information was collected through pre-programmed traffic classifiers and video taken at each study site and then analyzed to determine driver behavior as a result of the proposed skip stripe marking and related signing plan. Site visits to areas within Texas and around the country were conducted as a part of the research and to examine different options available related to the signing, marking, and geometric design of Super 2 passing lanes. Ultimately design criteria pertaining to the recommended signing and marking of Super 2 passing lanes were developed and presented in the form of a standard detail design sheet convenient for immediate use by TxDOT in practical highway design applications.en
