Visualization and analysis of computer network structures and accessibility have received more and more interdisciplinary interests these years. Currently existing methods of cyberspace mapping can be classified into three categories: (1) connection layer mapping, (2) transport layer mapping and (3) application layer mapping. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a GIS-based approach for mapping cyberspace and to discuss its implications. Two methods, web scan and hyperlink structure, are developed and implemented to represent the US Education Network and the Chinese Web sites around the world, respectively. Adapting Abler's conceptual framework, this thesis argues that the virtual space is replacing the absolute and relative space, at least in developed countries, and will place an increasingly important role in shaping the geography of information society.en
