A focusing schlieren technique has been designed and phics. constructed to examine planar images of optically thin phase objects including high-speed gas jets and flames. The conventional schlieren technique is a highly useful visualization method but is unable to discern images along the beam path. The focusing schlieren technique can overcome the limit so that it eliminates the line-of-sight ambiguities. The basic concept of the focusing schlieren technique is discussed and the experimental setup and procedures are described to construct the system. A comparative study has been made between the focusing schlieren visualization and the conventional schlieren visualization images of various phase objects. The focusing schlieren technique shows noticeable focusing enhancement over the conventional techniques. The successfully developed focusing schlieren system enables a planar visualization of a three-dimensional medium.en
