dc.description.abstract | Popular music is examined from two geographical perspectives, the image of place as represented in the titles of popular songs and the changing geography of the popular music industry. Examining the trend in place reference in popular song titles from 1970 to 1989, the most noteworthy finding is that the number of songs mentioning places in their titles dramatically drops. This trend toward a placeless popular music satisfies the needs of both the song producers, in the form of transnational corporations, and song consumers, for whom the role of place has become increasingly de-emphasized. | en |
