Abstract
This is an empirical study which aims at describing the speech of women in the Metropolitan Area of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Despite the fact that it has been proved that men and women speak differently, and that women use more standard forms than men, women's speech has not received enough attention. In South America, most of the subjects of dialectological studies have been men, and generalizations have been drawn from unilateral studies. As a contribution to the study of the linguistic variety of women, this thesis analyses the speech of women from the above-mentioned area in order to determine its phonetic, phonological, morphological, syntactic and lexicographic features. Fifteen women and five men were interviewed for the project. All the interviews were audio taped, and the information deciphered from the tapes formed the basis for the study. Certain aspects which had not been recorded before were discovered, and others were disproved.
