Abstract
A Hard Real Time (HRT) system is one whose correct functioning is based on the concepts of timely and correct delivery. By timely delivery, we imply that if a message is dispatched by a sender application it should be delivered at a receiver application before a pre-specified deadline. Any deviation from this may lead to the collapse of the entire system. There have been numerous papers and reports of guaranteeing end-to-end deadlines in computer networks at the network level. In this thesis, we focus on the extension of such deadline guarantees to the application level. In most of the cases, the host machines in which applications run become the major bottleneck for giving deadline guarantees. We present the design of a Host Traffic Management scheme which does host traffic control. We also report the implementation of the HTM system in an ATM LAN environment.
