dc.description.abstractThis thesis presents the analysis, design and construction of spiral springs for use in the Microgravity Simulator at Phillips Laboratory at Kirkland AFB in New Mexico. A finite element analysis to determine the behavior of three different length spiral springs was performed. Analytical results are compared with the predictions from the finite element model. This analysis also determined the size of the spiral spring necessary for the operation of the microgravity simulator. A new method of winding spiral springs based on a rotary table from a milling machine is presented. The construction of spiral springs as well as results from physical testing of actual springs are also presented.en
