This thesis is the result of an experimental study of the post buckling frictional effects of a circular rod laterally constrained within a horizontal circular cylinder. Previous theoretical works by Chen, Wu, and Cheatam are compared to experimental results and used to help describe the post buckling process. Frictional force created by the helix is experimentally studied and compared to the frictional force calculated using Mitchell's equation with respect to the applied axial force. Constructing a model three times the length of models used in previous studies increased the frictional effects to a magnitude which could be effectively observed and significantly reduced the end effects. The primary results of this study are a better understanding of the post-buckling process, the effect direction of movement has on the direction and magnitude of the frictional force downhole, and a verification of Mitchell's lateral force equation.en
