Integrated and active antennas are becoming increasingly more popular because they incorporate the component functions directly at the antenna terminals thereby reducing the size, weight, and cost of many microwave systems. A new transceiver is presented that has a Schottky mixer diode and an FET integrated within an inverted patch antenna. The FET serves as the source for the transmitter and as the local oscillator. A 5.5 dB isotropic conversion loss at 6 GHz with a 200 MHz intermediate frequency has been obtained. A two-way communication system using two of these transceivers is proposed.en
