The ability of three scales of the Marital Satisfaction Inventory to discriminate between distressed couples and controls was supported. The Global Distress Scale (GDS) was able to distinguish between maritally and financially distressed couples and controls; the Problem-Solving Communication (PSC) and Financial Disagreements (FIN) scales differentiated between distressed couples and controls. Most variance was explained by separate relationship and financial distress factors. Behavioral correlates for the FIN scale were derived. Correlates can be combined to interpret FIN scores. These findings echoed other literature underscoring husbands' tendency to emphasize financial matters. Clinical implications were discussed.en
