|dc.description.abstract||This research study focused upon the development of a general methodology to characterize regular and random waves in a large model basin. The objectives of the study were to both identify and quantify the various nonlinearities associated with wave generation, to obtain a better understanding of wave field evolution, and to make recommendations on improving the performance of a wave basin. A rectangular harbor model was used to simulate a large wave basin so that the natural periods of oscillation could be estimated. Using the model, it was possible to identify the cross tank modes in the OTRC wave basin. Certain issues and parameters were identified for the characterization of regular and random waves. Important factors to consider in characterizing the behavior of regular waves in a basin include wave linearity, longitudinal reflections, longitudinal and transverse natural periods, and damping. Wave directionality, spectral intensity, intensity of spreading, and damping were identified as important factors to consider in characterizing random waves. This study provided validation of the programs NUSIMR and NUSPEC for use in future research studies.||en|
