The use of computer modeling has become widespread in the engineering disciplines. Finite element models convert the properties of a specific volume to specific points in space called nodes. The conglomerated information stored in these nodes is then used to run iterative calculations to achieve desired solutions. This thesis will describe the process of designing an algorithm to automate the gridding and operational schemes for the finite element model GasPro. The result of this work and the inclusion of compaction effects and leachate generation and movement effects by Mehevec (1994) should provide the user with a tool for estimating leachate generation values and landfill capacity figures for a variety of initial design and operational parameters specified by the user. Ultimately, this model will strive to replace the time the user requires to generate and fill a given landfill geometry with time spent running and evaluating trials to yield the best design.en
