Abstract
Crossings are an important part of the historical and cultural settlement patterns of Texas. The lack of information is significant because much of it has already been lost. Information about roads, trails, ferries, bridges and low water crossings disappears with the passing of each generation of the population. The need for study in areas of historical and cultural information is primary. This is a study of crossings on the Navasota River between Brazos County, Texas and the adjacent counties of Madison County and Grimes County, Texas. Crossings on the Navasota River have been discontinued from use by government bodies and private land owners. The loss of location of crossings may be the loss of keys to past settlement. We have reaffirmed crossings at Bundrick Bridge, McRee's Bridge, Mesa Crossing, Davis Bridge and Fuqua Crossing, which are not in use today. We have located four other crossings that at this time remain nameless. The location of crossings must be determined through the use of historical papers and writings along with period maps. Locations of roads and trails point to the settlement factors and confirm crossings.
