dc.description.abstractTrellis coded modulation (TCM) has been applied to the fading channel recently [11-[3]. Among these articles, Divsalar and Simon showed in their papers that the length of the shortest error path and the product of the branch distance along the path are better code design parameters than the Euclidean distance of the path for the fading channel. Some research has been devoted to search for new trellis codes based on the new design criteria [31-[5]. On the other hand, multilevel TCM has been used on the Gaussian channel with good performance/complexity ratio [6, 7]. Motivated by above work, the author intends to study the method of applying multilevel TCM to the Rayleigh fading channel. This topic has been studied by other authors [8]. However, we take a different code design procedure according to the observation that multiplicities of a code are especially harmful to the error performance on the Rayleigh fading channel over the range of signal-to-noise ratio of interest. Several design examples of multilevel TCM for the fading channel are given in this thesis. As predicted by analysis results, the author showed by simulation that multilevel TCM can provide the effect similar to diversity for fading channels.en
