Abstract
Creation of space is the principal aim of architecture. It forms spaces and masses which model each other reciprocally and relate to each other through the representation of movement. Architectural space is characterized by infinite multiplicity, by rhythms acting in time. By assimilating pertinent information from outstanding writers in the area of space and space-time, by summarizing it into an illustration of the significance of space in the formation of architecture, and by drawing conclusions significant to the current need for study in this area, this thesis has been produced to achieve the following objectives: to contribute to the current need for the study of space in architecture, through an analysis of historical work, and to illustrate the importance of spatial history to a basic understanding of all architecture, through a presentation of the development of architectural space in the Gothic and Renaissance periods.
