Abstract
This study was designed to determine the type and number of health care professionals employed by selected petrochemical companies of the Texas Gulf Coast and to determine the nature of the utilization of these personnel in terms of primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive care. This descriptive study was conducted as a two part survey utilizing two instruments for data collection. Interviews with company spokespersons were conducted to elicit company data. Data from individual health care employees were collected via the second questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the data. The Chi-square statistic was used to analyze the data in order to answer the research questions. Within the limitations of this study, the following conclusions were made. 1. The Texas Gulf Coast petrochemical companies provide a variety of health care/health promotion programs for their employees. 2. An adequate number of health care professionals are employed to ensure delivery of these health care programs. 3. The professional occupational health nurses of the region provide primary preventive care for employees. 4. Industry relies primarily on professional nurses to provide health care. 5. There is a very high level of interest in continuing education among these health care professionals.
