A Dragon voice recognition system was interfaced with a Tandy robot and tested in a laboratory environment. Problems associated with noise, hardware interface, and speaker inconsistencies were observed. A speech enhancement circuit was developed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio of the speech waveform into the speech recognition board. The electrical effects and test results of the enhancement circuit were evaluated. The performance of the test subjects was evaluated with assertive and normal tones of voice. The overall performance of the developed system was tested with a set of simulated industrial tasks in a laboratory environment. The speech enhancement circuit significantly improved the speech recognition performance in noise levels up to 85 dBA. Assertively voiced speech yielded superior results to normal or discretionary voice. The efficacy of speech control of the robot was proven to be as effective as manual push-button control.en
