The electrochemical oxidation of 10β-methyl-lβ-trans-decalol (11) has been investigated using the aqueous acetonitrile - tetraethylammonium tetrafluoroborate electrolytic system with controlled and noncontrolled potential at a platinum and a carbon anode. Compound 11 was chosen for oxidation because its structure should facilitate an electrochemical Barton type reaction. The isolation of reaction products such as 15 and 18 is offered as conclusive proof of the intermediacy of oxygen-based radicals in the anodic oxidation of secondary aliphatic alcohols. The main reaction of this radical however, is not abstraction to yield the remotely functionalized products but β-fragmentation that leads to products 16 and 17. [see PDF for diagram]en
