Abstract
Spectra of inelastically scattered alpha particles from [superscript 40]Ca and [superscript 208]Pb have been obtained using a charge-division position sensitive proportional counter. Strongly excited bound states were observed up to 8.10 MeV of excitation for [superscript 40]Ca and up to 5.51 MeV of excitation in [superscript 208]Pb at a bombarding energy of 79.1 MeV. The excitation of a resonance ~3MeV wide in the continuum region at 18.25+-.25 MeV of excitation energy in [superscript 40]Ca was observed at a bombarding energy of 115.4 MeV. Angular distributions for the excitation of levels observed at 3.73, 3.90, 4.48, 5.26, 5.26, 5.90, 6.29, 6.58, 6.94, 7.94, and 8.10 MeV of excitation energy in [superscript 40]Ca have been obtained for laboratory scattering angles between 3.0 [degrees] and 36.0 [degrees]. The angular distributions were analyzed using the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) with macroscopic form factors.
