Abstract
The movement of people in urban communities in an efficient way is the critical transportation problem in Iran, as it is the case anywhere in the world today. There have been numerous studies to identify the problem and develop an effective alternative solution in developed countries, however, there has been very few, if any, in developing countries. Although there is no real solution for urban public transportation problems, but public mass transit is recognized to be an essential ingredient in any effective cure for urban traffic congestion. It has also been realized that the major difficulty for this alternative solution is financial, as urban public transit nowhere can pay for itself at the same time serving the public on a full-time basis. It is the purpose of this study to evaluate the issues of financing urban public transit in Iran. In undertaking this evaluation it was necessary to identify and evaluate the following: (1) Urban communities in Iran. (2) The existing land-use pattern, socio-economic conditions in general and transportation characteristics in particular in two selected urban areas in Iran. (3) The available alternative solutions to the existing urban transportation problems. (4) Methods and formulae used in developing countries in financing urban public transit. ...
