Abstract
The objectives of this study were to formulate a comprehensive statement of competencies needed by industrial arts teachers of innovative programs and to evaluate the existing industrial arts teacher education programs in Texas based on these needed competencies. Phase I of the study involved the validation of a list of competencies needed by future teachers. In order to accomplish this a nation-wide panel of leaders in industrial education was selected to develop a statement of competencies. Panel members were selected based on their involvement either in the development or the implementation of innovative programs in industrial arts. Phase II of the study involved evaluation of Texas industrial arts teacher education programs using the statement of competencies from the initial phase of the study. Participants in the evaluation phase were the department head or program chairman from each industrial arts teacher education program in Texas and a faculty member representing each institution. The evaluation was carried out on a two-fold basis. Each survey participant was asked to rate each stated competency on two scales: an importance scale based on his perception of the competency's importance to future programs, and a degree of development scale based on his perception of how well the stated competency is developed in their program..
